The Kingdom of the Floating Islands
Today I’m thinking about the floating island of Laputa, in Gulliver’s Travels, and the Island of Aeolia, in the Odyssey. A floating island is an incredible symbol of strength. It is a symbol of having impossible power at one’s fingertips – but not necessarily knowing how to use it.
As I work on building this, I think about the characters I want to live on it. I’ll use Betonquest to create scripts. I think I want to play with that idea of power and the ability to do the impossible. Perhaps there will be someone who seeks the impossible, or perhaps he will have everything and still want more. I’m not sure yet. I think I will have the islanders mention Aeolia and Laputa, because I like to encourage kids to make connections with great literature, but the story itself will have to include some quest players can do. Do you have an idea of what the story should be? Head over to the discussion zone to share your ideas. (You’ll need to login to join the conversation.)
This picture is only the beginning of the collection of floating islands. I’m experimenting with building them using the worldedit cylinder commands, used over and over at different heights and widths, and then with the whole island selected as a region I use //naturalize and //smooth.
I thank the players who helped me with the start of the buildings. You know who you are! I appreciate your help on this.
